What is Secured by Design, and why should your new windows and doors have it?

With the threat of burglary on the rise, it’s more important than ever to ensure your home is secure. Secured by Design is a police preferred specification which aims to achieve the following:

Deterrence

Prevent forced entry

Detect suspicious or criminal activity

Delay any unauthorised access to a property

When looking at windows and doors, Secured By Design has its own specification and targets. These include the following:

Deterrence

Security features should be visible and obvious. ‘One of the biggest mistakes people make is to install a new lock, but then not tell anyone where it is or how to use it,’ says Mark Brett, Technical Manager at Secure by Design.

‘It’s also important that doors and windows are easy to use – you want them as secure as possible without being difficult to operate.’

Security features should also be easy to understand. When it comes down to it, security boils down to two things: prevention and deterrence. Prevention means that criminals aren’t able to get into your home in the first place (by installing alarms and security shutters). Deterrence means making sure potential intruders know that there are going to be consequences if they try breaking into your home (by installing smart locks).

Prevent forced entry

The best way to avoid burglaries is to always keep doors and windows closed. Also, have locks on all doors and windows. Finally, if you have a burglar alarm system, make sure it’s set up properly and that the batteries are working.

You should also make sure that your valuables are not visible from the outside of your house. You can do this by keeping them in boxes or trunks that aren’t easily accessible by thieves. You may also want to consider having a safe room in which to store valuables when they’re not being used – this is especially useful if you live alone or if there’s no one around during the day who could be targeted by burglars looking for an opportunity such as this one! And finally…if possible…don’t forget about dogs! Dogs are great companions for everyone but especially good at protecting homes from unwanted intruders like burglars because they bark when someone approaches which alerts homeowners well before anyone breaks into their homes.”

Detect suspicious or criminal activity

  • Alerts the police when you are away from home
  • Ease of mind that your property is secure and functioning properly
  • Provides reassurance that your premises have not been broken into or damaged by intruders, or that it has not been abandoned.

Delay any unauthorised access to a property

If you’re looking for a way to delay any unauthorised access to a property, then Secured by Design is the answer. It’s a voluntary scheme that helps you choose security products from certified manufacturers and installers. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Bolts and locks – These are easy to install and help keep intruders out of your home. They can also be set up so that only authorised people can open them, which makes it harder for someone to break in.
  • Security grilles – These are metal grilles which cover windows or doors so burglars cannot reach inside easily. They often have bolts or locks on them too (like those mentioned above) so they stay firmly in place when locked shut!
